
Why we’re ditching old bathroom lamps for infrared heaters
If you’ve been looking at bathroom specs lately, you’ve probably noticed something. Those old-school heat lamps are disappearing. In their place, we’re seeing these high-waterproof infrared radiators. It’s not just about making the bathroom look modern. It’s about how the gear actually handles steam and heat when you’re trapped in a small, humid room. Let’s talk about the heat. Most old heaters try to warm up the air. But here’s the problem: heat rises. If you have high ceilings or a drafty window, all that warmth just hangs out at the ceiling while you’re still shivering. We switched to short-wave infrared to fix that. Instead of fighting the air, infrared works like the sun. It sends energy straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. You feel it the second you flip the switch. No waiting around for the room to “warm up.” And then there’s the moisture. Steam is a nightmare for electronics. Standard heaters often leak or just plain short out once the humidity gets inside the housing. That’s why we lean on high IP ratings. Basically, it means the seals are tight enough to keep the dampness away from the electrical guts. We also use sealed quartz tubes and special coatings. This stops the glass from cracking when it goes from freezing to boiling in a few seconds—that nasty “thermal shock” that kills cheaper bulbs. The practical side of things. The good news? These usually drop right into your old ceiling grids. You can use the existing wiring, but—and this is a big but—check your amperage. Infrared tubes pull more power than those old bulbs did. If your wiring is too thin, you’re going to be tripping your breaker a lot. One thing to keep in mind is the “hot spot.” A space heater warms the whole room evenly, but infrared is more like a beam. It’s concentrated. To get the most out of it, you’ve got to place the fixture exactly where you’ll actually be standing. Otherwise, you’re just heating up the bathmat.
