Let’s be honest: OEM heating tubes are expensive. Like, “why does a piece of glass cost this much?” expensive. It makes sense to look for a cheaper alternative. But here’s the thing—you aren’t just shopping for a light bulb. You’re trying to match the heat and the electrical pull of your oven exactly so you don’t end up with a disaster on your hands. Getting the power right You have to nail the wattage and voltage. Period. If your oven wants 230V and you throw in a lower-voltage tube, the current is going to spike. That’s a great way to trip your breakers or, worse, melt your socket terminals. And don’t eyeball the length. Even a few millimeters off means the tube won’t sit right in those R7s or SK15 sockets. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, you get arcing. And nobody wants sparks flying around a bakery. The science bit (simplified) Most of the high-end tubes we use are quartz glass with a halogen cycle. Basically, the gas inside keeps the tungsten on the filament instead of letting it build up on the glass. It keeps the tube running hot without it turning dark and cloudy. We stick with medium-wave infrared for bread. Why? Because it actually gets into the crust. It heats the bread through instead of just scorching the top the second it hits the heat. The trade-off These are designed to be drop-in replacements. You pull the old one, pop the new one in, and you’re back in business. Easy. But a word of warning: be careful with the “bargain basement” tubes. They often use cheap quartz that can’t handle thermal shock. If your oven clicks on and off rapidly, those cheap tubes will crack way faster than the name-brand ones. You save a few bucks today, but you’re replacing the bulb twice as often. One last tip? Clean your reflectors while you’re in there. It takes two minutes, but a dirty reflector kills your heat projection. It doesn’t matter how fancy your tube is if the heat is just bouncing off a layer of grime.
