
Why We Put Our Bathroom Heaters Through Hell
Let’s be honest: the bathroom is a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random water splashes, and temperatures that jump from freezing to tropical in about five minutes. Most companies just slap an IP65 rating on the box and hope for the best. We don’t do that. Instead, we put every batch of our infrared heaters through “damp-heat aging tests.” Basically, we try to break them so you don’t have to.
The battle against steam
Humidity is a silent killer for heating elements. If a tiny bit of moisture sneaks past the seals and hits the quartz envelope or the electrical terminals, the lamp is toast. To stop that from happening, we simulate years of showering in just a few weeks. We blast the units with 85% humidity and high heat, over and over. We’re looking for the small stuff. Is moisture creeping into the wiring? Are the contact points starting to rust? If those terminals oxidize, the resistance goes up, the unit overheats, and the lamp dies. It’s that simple.
The “Seal” Paradox
Here is the tricky part. To get that IP65 water-resistance, you need tight gaskets and sealed cables. But there’s a catch: if you seal a heater too well, it can’t breathe. The heat from the infrared element gets trapped inside the housing. If the internal thermal management isn’t spot on, the heater ends up frying its own wiring insulation from the inside out. That’s why we keep a close eye on insulation resistance during our tests. If that number drops, we know the seal is too tight or the materials can’t handle the heat. It’s a fine line between keeping the water out and letting the heat escape.
What this actually means for you
We aren’t chasing a “pass” grade on a checklist. We want to find the exact moment the product fails. When we see a seal give way, we go back to the drawing board. Maybe we tweak the gasket compression or swap out the potting compound. It’s a lot of extra work, but it means when you install these in your ceiling, you aren’t worrying about them tripping your breaker six months down the road. They just work.
