
Can a few new lamps actually save your old blow-molding machine?
Let’s be honest: most small PET shops are running machines that have seen better days. They’re reliable, but they’re slow. When you’re trying to hit modern cycle times with an old rig, it feels like you’re fighting a losing battle. You might think the only way out is to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine. But before you do that, take a look at your heating oven. That’s usually where the real bottleneck is hiding. Often, just swapping out those tired, old infrared lamps for high-density halogen tubes is enough to wake the whole machine up.
The secret is in the heat density
Here is how it actually works. To get a bottle right, you need to get that PET preform to its glass transition temperature fast—but you can’t just scorch the surface. We stick with shortwave IR lamps because they punch through the plastic much faster. If you bump up the wattage—say, moving from a standard 2kW tube to a 2.5kW or 3kW version—you’re essentially pumping more heat into the plastic in less time. The result? You can speed up your conveyor or maybe even cut out a few heating zones. It just flows better.
Getting the hardware right
Most of these ovens use quartz halogen tubes with R7s or SK15 connectors. The good news is that these are usually simple drop-in replacements. We use high-purity quartz glass because, let’s face it, these things get incredibly hot, and you don’t want your tubes warping under the stress. But a word of caution:watch your voltage. If you plug a 230V lamp into a 400V circuit, you’ll see a flash of light and then a dead lamp. Period. On the flip side, if you under-volt them, they’ll barely glow, and your cycle times will tank. Make sure your transformer and your lamps are speaking the same language.
The catch: Heat and Airflow
Now, there is a trade-off. More wattage means more heat, and not all of that heat goes into the plastic. A lot of it just dumps into the oven cabinet. If you go with high-power lamps but your cooling fans are weak, you’re going to run into trouble. You’ll get “hot spots” on your preforms, which leads to uneven walls and bottles that burst the moment you blow them. Before you pull the trigger on the upgrade, double-check your blowers. If you can move the hot air out, you’re golden.
